Non-pneumatic tires, or airless tires if you will, might be put into production in a consumer version as soon as 2014.
While the technology is not quite new, being showcased for the first time by Michelin back in 2005, the Non-Pneumatic Tires (NPT) haven't been offered for general use up until now.
But off-road vehicle specialist Polaris plans to change that and promises to start selling airless tires starting 2014. The Non-Pneumatic Tire was actually developed by Resilient Technologies, a small company acquired by Polaris last year.
"The tire works very similar to a bicycle wheel, where the load is carried in tension across the top of the wheel," says Polaris spokesperson Jason Difuccia. "The bottom of the wheel is designed to give in to obstacles like rocks, curbs, and other terrain."
To put it more simple, the NPTs are basically flat-proof, so once you get them on an all-terrain vehicle you won't have to worry about carrying a spare wheel and a jack in the trunk.
Pricing for these wonder tires hasn't been announced.
