Fisker Karma Wins 2009 Spark Design and Architecture Award

The Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid electric car has been presented with the 2009 Spark Design and Architecture Award, a new competition created to promote great design and designers and encourage people to explore their creativity.

Deliveries for the $88,000 Karma are projected to begin sometime in mid-2010. Fisker’s PHEV will initially be built in Finland, while Fisker readies a former GM plant in Delaware to begin production in 2012 of a line of less-expensive, "family-oriented" plug-in hybrid sedans.

“Being recognized by the prestigious judges at the Spark Award competition is really something to be proud of,” said Henrik Fisker, Fisker Automotive CEO and design director, in a release. “The entire Fisker  Automotive team and I are honored.”

The Fisker Karma PHEV is a full-size luxury sedan with four seats that has a driving range of 50 miles without emissions, thanks to its Lithium-Ion battery. The total driving range for the car reaches 300 miles, due to its on-board generator, powered by a traditional 260 hp Ecotec engine.

The Fisker Karma has an exclusive powertrain named Q-DRIVE, made up of two 201.5 hp electric motors that engage a single-speed differential. The performances read a 0 to 60 mph time of 6 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph. Also, Fisker claim their PHEV will run 100 mpg with a lower CO2 emission level than the current hybrids.

“Fisker Automotive has brought excitement to the new, much-needed category of green vehicles,”
explains Peter Kuchnicki, executive director of Spark Awards. “With a design like the Karma, the future of driving indeed looks bright.”

As for the two-wheeled category, Mission One motorcycle also clinched the gold award. Winners of the 2009 Spark Design and Architecture Awards are showcased at the Autodesk Gallery at One Market in San Francisco.
