These are the very first spy photos of the all-new Audi A5, the second generation of the coupe that proved four-ringed cars can look sexy. The model is expected to debut in 2016 as a 2017 model year and feature the latest tech the Germans have to offer.
The new A5 is going to be based around the same MLB Evo platform used by the Q7. Though the use of high-strength steel and aluminum for the outer panels, engineers will be able to shave about 100 kilograms (220 lbs).

Purely based on the photos, we can deduce that the A5 will become a little wider and longer, acting like a grownup car on the road. Styling is a step in the right direction, but still has hints of the older model.

When the first-gen coupe was launched, Walter Da Silva said it was the best car he had ever penned. But this is much better. Even with the camouflage on, you can still tell that this car has a wide grille and headlights with a three-dimensional design.

From the back, the LED taillights seem similar to those on the upcoming 2016 A5. The arch of the boom is really long, so you can't confuse this with anything other than a pure coupe, but there will be a 4-door Sportbakc version too.

Powertrains will range from frugal to extremely exciting. At the Vienna Motor Symposium, Audi unveiled a new 2-liter TFSI that's said to produce 190 PS yet consumes a diesel-like 5 liters per 100 kilometers. However, there will also be plenty of 2.0 TDI models as well, with outputs ranging from 120 to about 220 PS. At least one e-tron model will be offered, based on a diesel motor with additional electric power over the rear wheels.

Going up the range a little, we expect the A5 3.0 TDI to combined with standard quattro to deliver 272 PS. Beyond that is where the fun starts. The S5 could be offered with both a petrol 3-liter and a twin-turbo diesel. The RS5 will downsize from its naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 to a 3.6-liter twin-turbo offering nearly 500 horsepower.

Look for the all-new Audi A5 to bow at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. A production slot has already been assigned in August 2016. Until then, we'll keep an eye out for more prototypes.
