So much for handling and pinpoint accuracy – the Mercedes-AMG GT S, which was designed to be a competitor for the Porsche 911, has been turned into a drag racing machine.
At around $130,000 a piece, these bad boys aren't cheap, but they are much more affordable than the SLS and especially the SLR. Despite this, thanks to a twin-turbo V8 engine, the AMG GT is faster than its predecessor.
How does that translate into quarter mile times? Let's find out, since RENNtech have decided to take their test car onto the drag strip and see what it can do. The car set a time of 11.2 seconds with a trap speed of 127 mph. That means it's comparable to the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
There's a huge power gap between the 500-and-a-bit horsepower Mercedes and the supercharged 6.3-liter American coupe. That means that either the gearbox is doing a good job or there's something going on under the bonnet.
RENNtech are, of course, world-famous for their Mercedes tuning projects. So it would surprise us if they did something with the engine. During testing, RENNtech discovered that the GT S actually puts down 532 PS. However, their software is still under development. Expect Stage 1 to cost $3,500 and bring the total output to around 580 horsepower.
Designed to compete with the Porsche 911 range, the AMG GT is a front mid-engines car with transaxle and its intelligent aluminum lightweight construction forms the basis for a dynamic driving experience. It can be yours for as little as €115,000 if you go for the less powerful model, but supply is very limited right now.
