No, you don’t actually, as you’re free to move your mouse over the photo gallery at the bottom of this text anytime you please, but who knows, you might be missing on something.

The 2017 Kia Rio was one of the first cars to get spotted testing in 2016, making an appearance as early as the first working day of the new year. Right now, even though it’s the exact same car as before, we get to see its interior for the first time.

You’ll have to excuse our little tirade at the expense of the Kia Picanto. We actually like this little car and its no-fuss attitude, as well as the fun handling and back-to-basics philosophy. The current generation is also one of the most practical cars in its segment (together with its Hyundai i10 sibling), with plenty of interior space and an OK trunk once you fold the rear seats.

So there’s nothing wrong with this little car as long as you know what to expect and don’t set your expectations too high. And the new model, from the little we can see through the very well covered body, seems to apply the “more of the same” principle.

The new Picanto wears all possible kinds of camouflage, with the black fabric covering the psychedelic wrap appearing as a bit of overkill. But since not covering the car’s design lines was the whole idea, it’s a complete success.

The interior suffers the same fate as the exterior, at least where it matters the most: the dashboard. Hidden under a layer of carbon fiber wrapping, it’s only because of the spy photographer’s persistence that we actually get to see something out of it. And it’s what you’d expect from a model in this class: minimum number of buttons and knobs, a simple design and honest, hard-looking plastic. Plus some cupcake liners that are giving me a sudden, diabetes-inducing yearn.

The pictures also show the engine compartment and the trunk, but due to the black interior and the abundance of snow around, the dynamic range is too great and it’s impossible to make anything out in terms of size or overall functionality.

A nice (although useless) feature is the windshield’s top line that echoes the now famous tiger nose shape of the hood and grille. It’s not much, but it goes to show that Kia is trying to lift the Picanto from the mass of cars that make up the fleets of rental companies and turn it into something people would actually like to own. Let’s just hope these little touches go further than what we’ve seen so far.
