Abarth has begun testing its facelifted 500 model and we caught the very first pre-production prototype on a train.
Our collaborating photographers supplied us with a fresh set of spyshots of the car with nobody on board. The vehicle was spotted on a train with a bunch of other camouflaged FCA cars, like the Tipo hatchback.

By the looks of the prototype, the facelift for the Abarth 500 won’t be too different from the one the Fiat 500 has received. The little Italian rocket will get a new front bumper, with a different design and modified air intakes. The headlights and taillights will look just like the ones on the Fiat 500 facelift. The exterior package will be completed by a new wheel pattern.

On the interior, the car gets a new, upgraded infotainment system, like the one received by its facelifted smaller brother.

Rumors announce a power bump for the little Italian, made by Abarth’s finest. The most powerful version, fitted with the “esseesse” package, is expected to deliver up to 190 HP. That’s a lot of power for a car this small, we might add. Thanks to the upgrade, the Italian performance division can expect a nice sales boost for its lineup, at least until the launch of the rumored 500X crossover in Abarth spec.

Most likely, the new Abarth 500 facelift will debut in March 2016 at the Geneva Motor Show. In order to increase sales figures, Fiat's Abarth division will significantly increase the number of models it builds.

The Italian performance group will soon launch a version of the Fiat 124 Spider, along with a sportier variant of the 500X. These two new cars tackle segments that Abarth either hasn’t touched for years or has never entered in. We can only hope the eccentric Italian performance division lives on in the FCA portfolio and gives the world more of its outstanding creations.

In over fourteen years, he got behind the wheel of several hundred vehicles and in the offices of the most important car publications in his homeland.
