Toyota issued a recall today affecting about 20,000 sedans, minivans and crossovers due to a potential defect in the assembly of a fuel delivery component under the hood that could lead to a gasoline leak and possibly a fire if an ignition source is present. Involved in the recall are the 2014 Toyota Avalon, Camry, Highlander and Sienna models as well as the 2015 Lexus RX – all equipped with Toyota’s 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V-6 engine.
The recall is a result of an improper weld on the right side fuel delivery pipe end cap, which could cause gasoline to leak. So far, Toyota says that there have been no fires or injuries associated with this defect, although leaking fuel in the engine compartment is never a good thing.
It sounds like the poorly welded fuel delivery pipe is limited to a single supplier, so to remedy the problem, Toyota will have dealers inspect the part to see which supplier produced it. If the fuel delivery pipe was built by the particular supplier in question, it will be replaced at no charge to the vehicle owner. Toyota did not say how many of the 20,000 recalled units could potentially require a new fuel delivery pipe.
At this time, there is no official recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, so it is not clear which specific build dates are included in this recall. Toyota says it will notify customers when the recall goes into effect, but there is no word as to when this will happen.
