It's been on the market since 2005, it's styled by Giugiaro, it rides on a variation of the General Motors Gamma platform and it was first facelifted in 2009 when the Evo moniker was added to its name. Yes, we're talking about the Fiat Punto, which is set to receive a new facelift until a new model will be launched in 2016.
The production-ready Italian hatchback you can admire in the photo gallery below has been spotted by a member of the Team Fiat Moto Club and from the looks of it, designers have drawn inspiration from the Kia Cee'd for the facelifted Punto's sweptback headlights.
A restyled front grille and chrome-laden fog light surrounds are also on the menu. Overall, the front fascia of the facelifted Punto looks a bit like a dog's breakfast, which is unacceptable considering it was penned in Italy.
Round the rear we can see a more modern tail light design which would look at home on a Subaru or Toyota, not an Italian B-Segment hatchback. As for the inside, oh deary us. Except from a handful of leather here and there adorned with contrasting white stitching, the cabin design has a whiff of early 2000s to it. Cheap, different colored black plastics everywhere along with some chrome detailing for the gauges, air vents and infotainment system. Speaking of which, the glossy piano black plastic on the center console isn't scratch proof at all.
Props for the effort, Fiat, but you should've tried harder because the facelifted Punto isn't the type of car that would sell even in your home country. According to a recent report, under the hood you'll find the same engine lineup as before, the pick of the bunch being a torquey and frugal 1.3-liter MultiJet turbo diesel that churns out around 85 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque.
As for the next-gen Fiat Punto, we expect it to be launched sometime in 2016 and certain voices hint that it will be baptized the 500 Plus. Whatever name it will bear when the Punto replacement will hit European showrooms two years from now on, expect the supermini to be offered exclusively as a five-door model and sport slightly bigger dimensions in between the current 500 and 500L.
