Documents sent by the Chrysler Group to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and published by the latter inform that certain Fiat 500L vehicles are prone to a peculiar fault. The automaker isn't aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect that affects certain 2014 - 2015 Fiat 500Ls.
Chrysler believes that the potential number of cars affected is around 25,483 units, vehicles built from March 3rd, 2012 to July 25th, 2014. The submitted documents explain there were some irregularities in the folding process during the assembly of the driver's knee airbag. Because of this, there's an increased risk of improper airbag deployment.
If the airbag doesn't deploy accordingly in a crash, that would increase injury risk for the driver. As such, the previously mentioned Fiat 500L population fails to comply to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." In this regard, Chrysler informs it will notify owners this month, while dealer service departments are to replace the driver's knee airbag free of charge.
The Fiat 500L may be to the liking of a handful of U.S. motorists, but being priced from $19,195, the 500L is that bit more expensive than bigger cars such as the Subaru Impreza. But the price tag is not the biggest problem with the U.S.-spec 500L. Some of our readers told they're experiencing a number of problems with their Fiat 500Ls, such as with the automatic transmission giving up for no apparent reason. In addition to that, the IIHS gave an overall safety rating of "Poor" to the Fiat 500L mini MPV.
