The Maranello situation erupted after several car rental businesses offered a variety of low-cost packages to tourists and the residents started filing noise complaints in the city. Citing an Associated Press report, CNBC stated that over 450 tourists were pulled over in Maranello traffic after noise reports from locals.

These 450 incidents took place in the first nine months of 2015, which means that the tourists raised up around 50 noise disturbance claims a month. And this number only accounts for the drivers who were pulled over for noise complaints. The speeding tickets probably amounted to an impressive sum.

Apparently, the cost of renting a Ferrari in Maranello for 10 minutes was as low as 50 euros. Various rental companies in the city gathered a fleet amassing to 37 units, which meant that over 35 tourists could run around the otherwise peaceful Italian town for a few minutes at the wheel of a rented Ferrari. Judging by the number of noise complaints, this was a common issue and the residents’ patience ran out.

Maranello’s mayor issued new legislation that limits the timeframe of test drives and supercar rentals. Furthermore, business owners are forbidden to lure customers with their Ferrari rental deals outside of the brand’s museum. The rental company owners claimed they lost 80% of business because of the new laws and took the city to court. The businessmen eventually lost the lawsuit.

Fortunately, these 10-minute joyrides haven’t caused any significant material damage and no human casualties. We’re stating this because it is an inherent risk when someone pays only 80 euros to drive a supercar for 10 minutes and wants to get the most for their money.

This kind of news just makes us remind you to cherish the experience of driving a supercar in a responsible manner and to never endanger others for your enjoyment. In the case of the 450 tourists in Maranello, their joyrides endangered the businesses of the people who facilitated their low-cost rides in Ferrari cars.
