Ferrari Recalls the 458 Italia Due to Fire Risk

On many occasions, when you see a Ferrari 458 Italia, the vehicle is in the middle of forward surge, accelerating like there’s no tomorrow. However, it seems that the supercar’s parent is calling back all its children.

In other words, Ferrari is issuing a recall for the 458 Italia due to a fire risk. If you’ve been checking our news section in the last few months, you should be familiar with the long list of flaming 458s around the world.

The first idea that comes to one’s mind when thinking about this might be that a problem with the supercar’s engine is causing the fires. However, the issue has no connection with the 458’s mighty 4.5 liter V8 unit. Instead, the fires are caused by the adhesive used to hold the vehicle's inner protection of the fenders in place. This is flammable and sits too close to the exhaust system. When the vehicle is driven hard or for a long period of time (or, why not both), the glue can ignite, leading to a fire that may turn the entire car into ash.

The problem affects vehicles built before July 2010, which means that the recall includes a total of 1,248 cars. The cars are spread in countries from around the world.

The Prancing Horse said that the fix should take about half a day, with the technicians replacing the adhesive with metal fasteners. As expected, the operation will be performed free of charge.

The Ferrari 458 is just one more name on the list of supercars that like to play with fire, with another recent example being the Lamborghini Murcielago.
