Felipe Massa Says He May Leave Ferrari

Felipe Massa admitted, for the first time in years, that leaving Ferrari might actually happen in the future. Entering his 5th consecutive year as a Ferrari-an driver, the Brazilian is well aware of the fact that his deal with the Italian company runs out at the end of 2010 and, while hopeful that he can squeeze another extension from the Maranello officials, admitted that leaving Ferrari is a possibility until the end of his F1 career.

In a world where most drivers that come to Ferrari start their Maranello stint by promising they will end their careers in red overalls, Massa does otherwise. Although admitting he feels like home at Ferrari, his desire to keep racing in the Great Circus is greater that his love for the Scuderia.

I am 28. How can I promise? Alonso is right when he says that leaving Ferrari to go to a better place is unlikely if not possible. I feel at home here (at Ferrari), but I also want to race for many more years,” said Massa in an interview with Italy's Corriere dello Sport.

Massa, who was on the verge of becoming a world champion for Ferrari back in 2008, admitted that his manager has already begun negotiations for a renewal of his current contract. Asked if he regards MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi as a contender for that seat, the Brazilian smiled and begged to differ.

Of course not. Valentino has been 90 per cent playing, and 10 per cent seeing if he could have a future in cars. But at his age it is not so easy to start building up the necessary experience,” said Massa, referring to Rossi's latest tests with Ferrari.

According to some reports in the late months of 2009, the driver regarded as having the best chances of signing a deal with Ferrari next season is Polish racer Robert Kubica. After leaving BMW Sauber F1, Kubica signed a one-year deal with Renault F1, in order to become a free agent for the 2011 campaign.

Fernando Alonso and Robert Kubica are known to be the best of friends in the F1 paddock – while also poker buddies, along with Ferrari's test driver Giancarlo Fisichella – and were recently voted the most wanted drivers at Ferrari in an Italian poll.
