Facelift BMW 6 Series Range Goes Out for Tests, Barely Camouflaged

BMW’s current 6 Series Coupe will turn 4 next year and the Germans know that it’s time to give it a couple more weapons to keep it competitive against its most important rivals. That’s why they are now officially testing the ‘refreshed’ version of each body style.

Our spy photographers caught up with them in Germany and quickly snapped some shots of the prototypes or ‘Werkstestwagen’ as the Germans like to call them. Fortunately for us, they preferred to keep all of their eggs in one bucket so we got to see both the M Sport and standard Coupe going out as well as the Gran Coupe.

However, as you can see, the design changes will be minimal, just like they were on the updated 5 Series last year. Only small touches will be added to the front fascia, boot lid and taillights that are going to feature LEDs from now on, probably as standard.

The biggest changes will happen under the bonnet though, as we’re expecting the new models to received either upgraded engines or new technology inside. We’d be tempted to say that a hybrid could also be launched in early 2015 but the lack of spyshots showing us such a model seems to say otherwise.

Either way, new active and passive safety features will surely be integrated as well as the touch-sensitive iDrive controller that has been available on other models for quite a while now.

What’s more interesting though, is that BMW is testing the Gran Coupe alongside the Coupe which would hint at the fact that the entire 6 Series range will be updated next year, even though the 4-door coupe model was launched a year after the 2-door alternative. Since they do share the platform, engines, design and even transmissions, such a decision actually makes sense.

Price-wise, the bump shouldn’t be too high, probably less than $1,000 in the US. The launch of the new models would take place somewhere in the first quarter of 2015, either at Detroit or Geneva.
