If the previous generation of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG only came with two power levels, it looks like the new one will have at least four.
Mercedes-AMG has already revealed the E 43 4MATIC T-Modell, the entry level vehicle for anyone interested in a roomy AMG with impressive trunk space. Then there are the classic Mercedes-AMG E 63 and the "S" version that are still testing but should be launched soon after the sedan. That probably means very early next year.

And now we've received this set of photos showing us an even more extreme version of the station wagon, but one that leaves us guessing. Our spy photographer thinks this is the Black Series version, but we find that hard to believe. It wouldn't just be the first Black Series wagon, it would be the first one with more than two doors. Mercedes might be taking a lot of liberties with its lineup lately, but this just seems like a step too far.

Our initial thought was that we were looking at an odd, more powerful version, but that didn't make much sense either. How many power increments does one model need? It already has three (E 43, E 63, and E63 S), so why add a fourth? A closer look at the images revealed that the car is slightly taller than you would expect from something sporty, even if it's a station wagon. It almost appears to be crossoverish, doesn't it? Where have we seen that recently?

Yup, this might just be the AMG version of the recently spied Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain, a slightly more rugged version with flared wheel arches, thicker wheels, and an increased ground clearance. After all, Mercedes makes AMG versions of bona fide off-roaders (G 65 anyone?), so why not do the same with something a lot softer?

Besides, it would basically turn Mercedes into a segment pioneer, something it always enjoyed being. Audi might be the king of fast station wagons, but it doesn't have an all-road version. Well, not yet, at least. Who knows, maybe wagons that can handle themselves on rough terrain will slowly become the segment of choice for those who are sick of SUVs but seek something with similar aptitudes. A counter-SUV trend. And a few of these people will always want something that can also go fast.

And go fast it will. This Mercedes-AMG E 63 will more than likely use the same 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine we've come to know and love, which means we should expect the same power ratings similar to the rest of the team. That means 612 hp for the S version, more than enough to make the E 63 All Terrain (or whatever it will be called) fly over any type of road.

Expect the AMG car to follow the regular version, which should debut later this year. That means we have a few more months of testing during which to gather more info on the new model. Stay tuned.
