Rumors about a possible BMW X4 M model or an M Performance version have been going around the internet even before the car was officially unveiled. However, up until now, there’s been no official stand on the matter, some voices over at BMW strongly denying the possibility of an M model. How about an M Performance model then?
One of our sources close with BMW told us that such a model is not only possible, it’s on the pipeline already. According to him, the new MPA will be called BMW X4 M40i and will be using the same powerplant as the upcoming BMW F87 M2. The good news don’t stop there though.

Just like the M2, the new M40i will also be available with both an automatic and a manual gearbox to hook up to the upgraded N55 engine under the bonnet. Rumored to make around 360-380 HP, the new inline 6-cylinder 3-liter turbocharged unit will, most likely, be pushing around 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) to the wheels.

In the case of the M2, that will mean madness for the rear tires but on the X4, the xDrive all-wheel-drive system will take care of it, sending it in harmony to all four corners of the car.

Earlier, this year, we told you that the M2 will start production in November 2015. Well, we won’t have to wait too long for the X4 M40i either, the production start being scheduled for December 2015 and ending in March 2018, just in time to see a proper M version if BMW ever decides to make one.

Of course, just like all other M Performance Automobiles out there, the X4 will also be available with various M Performance parts that can be ordered separately and installed after the purchase. Amongst them we’ll find new wheels, mirror covers, brakes and even a fresh exhaust, all of them being already available for the standard X4.
