EPA to Change Fuel Economy Labels

In light of the new trends in the automotive industry, meaning the launch of cars with new technologies and features aimed at reducing fuel economy and the environmental impact, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have called today on the creation of new fuel economy labels.

The new design and traits of the labels are to be discussed with the consumers, who can submit their ideas, review the proposals and stay informed at the following link. Currently, the EPA already has two proposals submitted, one for gas and one for diesel vehicles.

Aside for these types of vehicles, the two agencies are proposing the introduction of labels for electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), compressed natural gas vehicles and flexible fuel vehicles.

"We are asking the American people to tell us what they need to make the best economic and environmental decisions when buying a new car," EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson was quoted as saying by USA Today.

"New fuel economy labels will keep pace with the new generation of fuel efficient cars and trucks rolling off the line, and provide simple, straightforward updates to inform consumers about their choices in a rapidly changing market."

“We want to help buyers find vehicles that meet their needs, keep the air clean and save them money at the pump."

According to the EPA, comments and suggestions will be accepted for 60 days beginning when the current proposal is published in the Federal Register.
