Elon Musk Officially Asks for Permission to Launch 4,000 Satellites: Internet

Prodigy has been telling us they’re planning to send him into the outer space, to find another race, but until recent years nobody really understood what that meant. Elon Musk is among those visionaries who are taking things seriously. Not only is he taking us into space with the SpaceX shuttle, but he’s also planning to connect us all via a fleet of 4,000 internet-beaming small satellites.

As the Tesla Motors enthusiast you may or may not be, there’s little to zero chances that you haven’t heard of the South African-born genius’ plans to rule the world. No, seriously, there’s no evil plan hid underneath those solar cells-roofs they are currently building in Nevada (yes, the Gigafactory).

Now, leaving all the jokes aside for a minute, you’ll want to know that Elon Musk is in a race to change the rules of the game, namely the internet service providers world. Because let’s face it, they all are. Facebook is sending solar-powered drones, Google is testing big balloons, and there is at least a dozen of other smaller companies looking into it.

The difference is that the Tesla Motors CEO is also running the game at SpaceX, a space travel company that is not only looking to shuttle astronauts on the International Space Station for NASA. As we mentioned before, Musk will eventually hint at commercial space flights too; and with this announcement, he’ll also use the spacecraft service to launch internet-beaming satellites.

According to The Independent, the man who wants to nuke Mars to make it habitable has officially requested permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a 4,000 strong fleet of satellites into orbit. Once he gets the green light, the satellites could be up and running within five years. Five years, people! That’s about the same time it took most of the world’s governments to start the sustainable energy discussions after decades of alarm calls coming from environmentalists.

And don’t just imagine these puppies - satellites that would reportedly weight less than 255 lbs (115 kg) - will be there just for plastic celebrities like Kim Kardashian to post a selfie on Instagram. The application will most likely refer to Tesla Motors’ plans for a future of self-driving electric cars.
