Navigant Research has published the results of a recent survey which aimed at estimating the dynamics of the electric motorcycle and scooter market for the future decade. These estimations should bring joy into the hearts of the electric two- and three-wheeler manufacturers as the number of such vehicles sold annually in 2023 is believed to reach as high as 55 million.
Current statistics indicate that around 12 million electric motorcycles and scooters are being sold each year worldwide, with the smashing majority of them sold in… China. That’s right, according to the same sources, Chinese sales account for a whopping 98% of the total of e-bikes being sold in the world, with the western markets representing only a tiny fraction of the big picture.
While Navigant’s press release doesn’t provide data on the dynamics of sales in the European and markets, these figures as also expected to improve. Even so, 2 percent of the estimated 55 million makes 1.1 mil units, which is really awesome.
Navigant says that the increase in the sales of electric bikes (motorcycles and scooters) will be triggered by several factors, among which the most important ones are the constant drop in the price of components for these vehicles (batteries and motors) over the increasing prices of gas around the world. Even more, manufacturers and governs are working closer than ever to dish out various tax exemptions and incentives to draw more riders into buying an electric vehicle. The most recent example has been set by Oregon-based Brammo, which operated dramatic price cuts for some of its 2013 and 2014 Empulse and Empulse R models in an end-of-summer deal.
Even bike manufacturers which are renowned for the conservative views on technology, like Harley-Davidson have started electric mobility projects (Livewire), and have joined the ranks of other big names in the business, such as BMW, with its C-series-derived evolution C electric maxi scooter.
