Fiat’s Multiair technology is a real step forward in the history of the petrol engine, making it extremely efficient, while offering decent power and fuel economy. The engine was developed with large costs on Fiat’s side, so they have kind of neglected EVs, (justifiably, if you ask us) and have concentrated on perfecting what is already available, instead of moving on to something new.
According to reports, Sergio Marchionne, Fiat CEO, said that they would start making hybrids and natural gas-powered vehicles by 2017, in an effort to keep up with other manufacturers which are currently way more advanced than they are, when it comes to alternatively powered vehicles. The electric 500 will get around 100hp and a 150km (90-mile) range, though no official statemens concerning this have been made.
Marchionne also said that they would be making the Fiat 500 EV (probably going to be called 500 Elettra, after the 2010 concept). It is also questionable how well it will do on the US market, considering the fact that it’s expected to cost roughly three times more than the petrol-powered 500 sold there, and that they will be losing around €8,000 ($10,000) per each car sold. Fiat area really lagging behind in terms of EV technology, and they need at least another 5 years to make something good of it.
All this is quite strange, considering that there’s a German company which does Fiat 500 electric conversions for €35,000 ($46,000), including the car. That’s still €8,000 ($10,000) less than the expected price of the future 500 Elettra.
