In 2011, Triumph launched three new motorcycles, the Tiger Explorer, Speed Triple R and the Steve McQueen Special. This brought about a change of pace and the revival of the British automaker. At the 2015 EICMA motorcycle show, they're back with a revamped Tiger Explorer model that's poised to go on sale for the 2016 model year.
The range is now split between two variants - the XR series designed to deliver the best on-road ride and the XC series, made with off-road users in mind.
The Explorer XR is great for people who like to combine long freeway journeys with a bit of blacktop trailing. For comfort, you get cruise control and a soft seat, while the windshield pushes the air over your helmet. The big triple-cylinder between your legs is not the most powerful in its class, but it's just as enjoyable as that of the KTM1190.
There are several trim levels available to choose from. The range-topping Explorer XCa and Explorer XRt models are said to offer a high level of equipment and tech. All are powered by the same 1215cc triple engine that's unique in the large capacity adventure segment because it delivers its power through a final shaft drive.
Just like the rest of the motorcycle industry, the new Tiger Explorer focuses on state-of-the-art active technology designed to ensure stability. Features include a semi-active suspension system, corner-optimized switchable ABS plus Traction Control, and several Rider Models, one of which can be individualized.
Additionally the new Hill Hold Control system stops the motorcycle from rolling back when attempting to set off on a steep incline. That's going to be extremely helpful when the motorcycle is fully-loaded and carrying a passenger.
With that low to mid-range power, the Tiger Explorer remains a great adventure model. For 2016, it's made safer and much easier to use without taking away from the fun aspect. We like the shielding for the accessory lights on the XC, as well as the sold-looking side cases that were presented at EICMA.
