Dutch Woman Leaves into a Journey to the South Pole with a Tractor

After crossing Africa in a four-year adventure from her home town in Holland to Cape Town 38-year old actress Manon Ossevoort has now decided to finish the last leg of her tractor-journey. She will make a 4,500 km (2,800 miles) round trip across the largest single mass of ice on earth, from Russia’s Novo base on the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back.

The new mother of a 10-month old baby girl has been dreaming to end her trip ever since she missed a boat, five years ago, in Cape Town, due to delays. She came back home and started a new life, writing a book, worked as a motivational speaker and started a family. However, her childhood dream did never leave her, as she also partnered up with tractor makers Massey Ferguson who built her a special ride to bear with the harsh weather conditions in Antarctica.

It was just a couple of days ago when the tractor got to Cape Town only to fly to Antarctica this week and set off for the pole. She named it Antarctica 2, in honor of legendary explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, who was the first to travel to the South Pole on tractor back in 1958. Her sponsors helped her with modified inflatable tires for maximum floatation and traction, polycarbonate windows (instead of glass) and extra fuel tanks.

Also, as opposed to her former Africa venture, she will be accompanied by a team of seven, including a camera crew and tractor mechanic Nicolas Bachelet who will share the driving.

Ten kilometers an hour would be good, 15 would be nice, 20, lovely. We plan to drive on a 24-hour traveling schedule with the tractor driving as much as we can. If there are extreme white-out or storm conditions stopping us, we’ll cover the tractor with a specially designed tractor tent. It covers the tractor entirely and blocks the wind, which will prevent the temperatures from dropping below -20 degrees (Celsius)”, Ossevoort explains.

The former theatre actress says she is not only fulfilling her longtime dream, but is also trying to spread a message to the entire world. She believes human beings are able to overcome any situation and make any dream come true as long as they work hard for it.

She wants our children to read about something else than politics and war

The Dutch adventurer is also trying to help others fulfill their dreams, as she had scraps of paper and emails converted into digital form which she will place in the belly of a big snowman she plans to build at the pole. The time capsule will be opened only in 80 years time. “I want to turn them into a beautiful time capsule of the dreams of the world so that in the future children and people can read something about our dreams and not only about politics and war
