When you’re picturing a dune buggy for yourself you usually get through two options - the iconic budget ones based on old VW Beetles or the full-on off-roading beast offered by Local Motors. However, there’s a third option now - custom made dune cars made by Sand Cars Unlimited.
Most of the models they build look like boats with wheels, but don’t be fooled by the appearances - these things go like stink on sand and also cost an arm and a leg.

Depending on what you want, you can pay more than $340,000 (€300,000) for one. What do you get? Forget the car-like comfort and amenities you can get in a Local Motors Rally Fighter. Here you get a seat and something to hold onto for the bumpy adrenaline-injected ride that comes.

The top notch engine you can have is a twin-turbo V8 mounted in the rear and blasting a whopping 700 hp. Seven hundred horsepower on a tubular chassis with some fiberglass body panels and wheels! If you never saw wheelies done on fine sand, this is the right machine to introduce you to them.

Shot by British filmmaker David Jeffery, 22, the thrilling footage below shows the lightweight high-powered buggy hitting speeds of over 110 mph while cutting through the thick terrain.
