With wireless charging technology already here and fully functional, it’s only a matter of time before its costs of production fall to a low enough level to allow mass-adoption of the system. A recent study by Pikes Research suggests that the market for such systems will triple within the next 8 years.
The study does not only involve automobiles, but also mobile devices, electronics as well as industrial applications, and the revenues produced are expected to grow from the current $4.9 (€3.9) billion to an estimated $15.1 (€12.1) by 2020. However, despite the fact that the US is currently the largest market for such systems, it is clear that things will not remain this way for long, because by the year 2015, the Asia-Pacific region will surpass the US in the sector.

Also, according to Bob Gohn, VP of Pikes Research, “While the market is still nascent, the rapid spread of wireless charging systems for mobile devices is a clear indicator that the broader wireless power sector has the potential to be a game-changer [. . .] Evidence is building that wireless power technology can be an environmentally friendly technology and that, before the end of the decade, it could contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and embedded energy used to produce, ship, and dispose of conventional charging equipment.
