Daimler Pulls Out of Iran

In light of last year's political and civilian turmoil in Iran, as well as in expectance of the new sanctions to be imposed, if agreed upon, by the US, has caused German carmaker Daimler reconsider it's position in the country.

As a result, Daimler's chairman of the board, Dieter Zetsche, announced today it will give up its 30 percent stake in Diesel Engine Manufacturing. In addition, pending applications to export three-axle commercial vehicles for civilian use to Iran have also been withdrawn in Germany.

"In view of the current political situation we have... extensively reassessed this business relationship," Zetsche said at the annual shareholder meeting. "None of these measures are directed against the Iranian people. However, the policies of the current Iranian leadership have compelled us to put our business relationship with that country on a new footing."

According to Zetsche, today's decision means that from now on, Daimler will limit its business locally at meeting existing contractual obligations.

Daimler's announcement, however, pales when compared with the international turmoil on the Iranian nuclear program issue. The Obama administration is asking for tougher sanctions against what it considers to be a nuclear power in the making, while countries like Brazil and Turkey showing their reluctance in backing the American proposal.

Meanwhile, Iran lodged a formal complaint to the UN for "blatant violation of the international use to strike a non-nuclear armed country with nuclear weapons." Their complaint is based on the fact that the US neglected to include Iran and North Korea in the US Nuclear Posture Review, leaving the door open to a possible nuclear strike against Iran.
