Because Renault has already let slip two concept cars with engines in the back, smart's range of models is beginning to take shape. The next generation Renault Twingo will, amazingly, have its engine in the back and be mechanically similar to the smart four four, previously a Mitsubishi Colt derivative.
Daimler has today made an official statement promising to have the extensive portfolio of electric vehicles in the industry, which will include an electrified version of the forfour. This does not surprise us at all, since Renault's Twin-Z concept which previews the Twingo also has an electric powertrain.
Details about the specific output are still vague, but some reports suggested EV version of the next fortwo and forfour could have as much as 90 PS.
More than 1000 units of the smart fortwo electric drive have already been produced and delivered to customers, and accounts for 20% of Germany's electric car market. Mercedes hopes to also grow a few green leaves, lowering its average CO2 emissions to 125 g/km by 2016.
