Daimler-BYD EV Enters Prototype Stage

Less than a year since German group Daimler struck a deal with Chinese automaker BYD for the creation of an electric vehicle for the Chinese market, news of the collaboration between the two was made public.

According to the details released during the first board meeting of the Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Company Limited joint venture, the research phase of the project is nearly complete, the unnamed EV now entering the prototype stage.

To help the process, Daimler and BYD have both sent designers, engineers and procurement and quality management officers to the joint venture's headquarters. But even with all this fuss surrounding the model, little information is available for now.

When was it believed to have been the first photo of the Daimler-BYD EV surfaced in the first month of 2011, a few details about the car came to surface. The model is said to become, designwise, a combination between a sedan and a crossover, built with much more traditional lines that the EVs of our day.

There was, until now, no word on what would power the car, as the joint venture must feel divided between Daimler's preference for fuel cell systems and BYD's experience with manufacturing lithium-ion batteries and conventional EVs. This week, however, Daimler revealed that the model would use Iron-Phosphate battery technology and electric drive systems.

One thing is for sure, though. Even if it will be Chinese, the car will be of German quality. BYD and Daimler have promised that the entire car will meet the quality standards for design imposed by Mercedes Benz experts.
