Automobile Dacia may have started life in 1966 as a humble car manufacturer based in Mioveni, Romania, but since the Renault Group acquired it in 1999, the low-cost volume brand turned around 180 degrees.
A big player in terms of exports, the country that buys most Dacia vehicles is France. Still, the British motorist has grown to like the automaker's offerings as well. Although Dacia landed in the United Kingdom in January 2013, the Romanian manufacturer sold 50,000 vehicles in the Albion to date.
Marketed as "shockingly affordable" and known for its advertising department's straight-talking approach, it's no wonder how Dacia managed to move so many cars in such a short timeframe. Dacia’s biggest seller in Great Britain is the Sandero Stepway (with 16,834 sales) while the Duster (the UK’s most affordable SUV) has accounted for 16,541 of the 50,000 total.
The Sandero, which is the country's most affordable new car at £5,995, and Logan MCV wagon have also proved popular with cost-conscious motorists, achieving 12,432 and 4,193 sales, respectively. “When Dacia arrived in the UK it immediately struck a chord with new car buyers looking for maximum value for money," commented Andy Heiron, Dacia United Kingdom brand manager.
The 50,000th Dacia sold is a Duster. If you're into specifics, we're much obliged to tell you that it's a Lauréate dCi 110 4x2 painted Khaki. It was sold by Westover Dacia in Corfe Mullen, Dorset and was bought by part-exchanging another Duster a couple bought new when it was launched in 2013.
