Cycle Helmet with In-Built Blonde Hair Wig Is the Safest, Study Says

We’ve seen crazy helmet designs before, so the idea of having an incorporated wig comes as no surprise. But what if we told you that specific design has proven to be the safest out there? And it’s not us, but scientists talking. According to a recent study conducted by Bath University, the Helmet Hair design, which incorporates a long, flowing blonde wig, keeps drivers from overtaking too close.

The study revealed that car drivers leave less room when overtaking a cyclist wearing a helmet, but a much wider berth when passing a female rider with long hair. Drivers pass an average of 8.5 cm closer to cyclists with a conventional helmet than without.

Intended to be worn by both men and women, the Helmet Hair draws on these findings to provide cyclists who choose, or are forced by legislation, to wear head protection the best of both worlds: the perceived benefit of wearing a helmet without the disadvantage of being overtaken too close by drivers.

The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) is offering the radical ‘Helmet Hair’ design for £49.99 plus £4.99 postage & packaging. Helmet Hair is available in a variety of colours, but following extensive on-road testing it was found that the blonde hair design was the most effective at encouraging drivers to overtake safely. Orders can be placed by emailing [email protected].

“The launch of this revolutionary design is timely, and not simply because Northern Ireland has been considering making cycle helmets mandatory,”
said Yannick Read at the Environmental Transport Association (ETA). “This may well be the most effective cycle helmet on the market – as a man I find it gets the attention of drivers far more effectively than the brightest high-visibility vest.”
