Another spy photo of the upcoming 2015 model year Yamaha YZF-R1 has surfaced, and this time it looks like it actually depicts what seems to be the real superbike. The in-line 4-cylinder engine now appears to be a sure thing, as the R1 is also referred to as CP4, a name already trademarked by Yamaha. Similarly, the 3-cylinder MT-09 is dubbed CP3, while the parallel-twin MT-07 is named CP2. In the case of the CP4 and CP3, the letters could stand for cross-plane (crankshaft).
On the aesthetic side, the new R1 doesn’t seem to have received too much changes, save for some expected minor tweaks to help keen eyes differentiate the model years. The biggest upgrades are however expected to be present in the technology department, with Yamaha apparently looking forward to follow into the steps of BMW’ S1000RR, Aprilia RSV4 or the liter-class Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja.

The most interesting thing about Yamaha’s new superbike is the fact that two versions are rumored. Reportedly, Yamaha has registered two names related to the R1 machine: YZF-R1M and YZF-R1S. With M being part of the name for Iwata’s YZR-M1 MotoGP prototype, it’s probably safe to assume that the R1M is going to be a higher-specced version.

In case this supposition turns out to be true, then the R1M should slot in the upper range of the superbike class and rival the likes of BMW’s HP4 version of the S1000RR or Honda’s CBR1000RR SP Fireblade. This makes the R1S, with S possibly standing for “street”, the “casual” R1, even though this machine is anything but casual.

Yamaha is said to be impatient to show its new machine(s), so they will make appearance at the Intermot in Cologne, Germany in early October, only to be displayed one month later in Milan, Italy at the 2014 EICMA, rumor has it.
