When you’re out there lapping the Nurburgring, three-wheeling mode is something you will most likely achieve, but when that wheel enjoying air time decides to leave the car, you know you’re in big trouble.
This is precisely what happened to a C6 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 earlier this week, with the adventure leading to a nasty crash. The ‘Vette was in the middle of a corner, overtaking an Opel Kadett, when the rear wheel on the driver’s side came loose.

The man behind the wheel lost control, with the car doing somewhere about 90 mph (145 km/h) at the time. The rear end stepped out, with the Corvette spinning multiple times.

Due to its three-wheeler status, the Chevy took quite a while to bring to a halt. Nevertheless, once the car stopped, it became clear that the driver was not injured. In fact, we get to see the man stepping out of the crashed car and checking out the empty wheel well as if he was in disbelief.

This could have ended much, much worse and we’re not just referring to the Corvette getting up close and personal with the protection elements on the side of the track.

The guy manhandling the Opel truly knew what he was doing

As we mentioned above, the sportscars was overtaking an Opel when that rear wheel said goodbye. The two cars were going through the final stage of a corner when it became obvious that the ‘Vette would crash into the Kadett.

Nevertheless, the driver of the Opel showed a superb set of skills, as he basically slalomed around the Corvette that was spinning all over the place.

This only reminds us how dangerous the Nurburgring Touristenfahrten (tourist days) are. If you’re planning to attend one of these events, make sure your 360-degree attention is active.
