If you don’t follow car-world news, Continental presented a vehicle-to-vehicle information system last year called the eHorizon. Recently, the company announced it has adapted the system for motorcycles to aid riders to be safer on the streets and also discover new routes.
Using something Continental dubs “swarm intelligence”, the motorcycle version of eHorizon will interconnect bikers by offering a shared platform to communicate. Think of it as some sort of Waze for riders, which also notifies you about dangerous roads for riding or obstacles that might send you down.

“The stored data is collated in the cloud and made available to all motorcyclists. As a result, the eHorizon system informs bikers in advance of obstacles along their route such as construction zones, accidents, slippery conditions, or traffic jams. Having this information can enhance safety, not only for motorcyclists but also for other road users,” said Ralf Lenninger, head of Continental’s Intelligent Transportation Systems.

To use the system, Continental designed a new digital instrument cluster that shows both usual data like road and engine speed, as well as safety-relevant information on the traffic, weather, and road obstacles and other dangers.

The system can be customized according to the user’s preference, and the same dash is used to supply the digital map with route data. Don’t worry; you don’t need to fiddle with it or with your phone while riding - you only have to push a button to record your current position. Then, when you stop, you can use a smartphone app to add specific information about the event and location stored.

The data is then collected and processed in the cloud, added to an incident map, and then shared with other bikers that go the same route. The custom instrument cluster will use Bluetooth connectivity to pair with your phone.

Apart from informing riders about the danger up ahead, the app platform from Continental will give motorcycles the opportunity to create communities and allows existing groups to share data digitally and even suggest nice riding routes.

The eHorizon for Two-Wheelers platform will be showcased at CES 2017 in Las Vegas.
