Citroen Xsara Picasso Discontinued

The gamble French manufacturer Citroen took back in 1999, when it launched the oddly-shaped Xsara Picasso MPV, ended this year, after the announcement about the discontinuation of the model was made. In its 11 years of existence, the model was a moderate hit, selling a bit over 1.7 million vehicles.

The original Xsara Picasso, designed by Donato Coco, has spawned over the years several derivatives, the Xsara Picasso being currently marketed in three variations of the original, including the larger 7-seat Grand C4 Picasso and the 5-seat C4 Picasso. At its launch, it was meant as an alternative for the Scenic, with which it fought to this day.

According to the French manufacturer, most of the orders for the model in its lifespan (1.736.727, to be more precise) were placed for the 2.0 HDi version which develops 90 hp. The top three best selling versions of the model are completed by the ones running on liquefied petroleum gas and methane.

The termination of the model already began earlier this year, with the British market being the first to say goodbye to the model. The British Islands proved to be very friendly to the model, as the market ate up to 270,000 units in ten years.

Citroen is slowly killing off the old models, to replace them with the new army of vehicles which began being launched last year. This August, the French also announced the termination of the C3 Pluriel, the topless version of the original Citroen C3. The model was introduced in the summer of 2003 and sold only 109,682 units.
