Chrysler Cordoba Spokesman Ricardo Montalban Dies at 88
For petrolheads, Montalban was known as the spokesperson in automobile advertisements for the Chrysler Cordoba (in which he praises the "soft Corinthian leather" used for its interior). His death was first made public at a city council by president Eric Garcetti, who represents the district where the actor lived. His son-in-law Gilbert Smith explained that Montalban had been in declining health for months and died from "complications of advancing age."
Montalban was a star in Mexican movies when MGM discovered his talent and brought him to Hollywood in 1946. His most famous movies are “Fiesta” ,”On an Island with You'' , ''Neptune's Daughter” and of course the TV series “Fantasy Island”. In 1978, he won an Emmy award, while in 1993, he got a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild.
Up until his 80s, he continued to act, often providing voices for animated films and commercials. More recently, he appeared in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan'' and ''The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.''
“What you saw on the screen and on television and on talk shows, this very courtly, modest, dignified individual, that's exactly who he was,'' Montalban's longtime friend and publicist David Brokaw confessed.
Another person who showed his regret towards the loss of Ricardo Montalban was Raul Yzaguirre, longtime president of National Council of La Raza who called him “a hero”, reminding the actor's contributions to his community. ''He was just a marvelous human being and an inspiration to be around,'' Yzaguirre said adding that he hopes “his spirit pervades more of Hollywood - the spirit of humility and excellence and giving back to the community and just plain decency.''
Ricardo Montalban leaves behind two daughters Laura and Anita, sons Victor and Mark and six grandchildren to carry his name forward.
