The main downside of buying an EV is just that - buying the EV, because of the very high purchase cost. However, a new company called Alvarez Electric Motors Company (AEMC) has just launched range of EVs, three-strong.
It includes a small two seater, called the Eco-E, a small pick-up truck called the EcoTruck, and a van the name of which you’re never going to guess - yes, it is EcoVan. The Eco-E, the cheapest of the lot, will set you back $9,995 (€8,100), while the EcoTruck and EcoVan are a little bit more expensive, at $16,995 (€13,800) and $17,995 (€14,600) respectively.

AEMC is a new company, founded by a Lincoln and Jaguar dealership owner from California, who has opted to import vehicles made in China, by Liuzhou Wuling Special Purpose Vehicle Manufactureing Co., employing the use of absorbed glass mat batteries (AGM). This gives the vehicles a range of between 25 and 40 miles (40 and 64 km) - their top speed is limited to 25 mph (40 km/h).

The owner, Ramon Alvarez, said "Americans who love the environment and hate the price of gasoline are showing an increasing level of interest in owning an electric vehicle, but they sometimes have been stymied by the relatively-high cost of ownership. AEMC is going to bridge that gap with a commuter car that is priced just under $10,000 and is eligible for thousands of dollars in rebates and tax credits through our local, state and federal governments."
