China Recalls... Big Macs? Key McDonald's Supplier Accused of Repackaging Old Chow

While General Motors continues to report an almost constant barrage of problems with their cars, China is experiencing a recall of an entirely different nature: hamburgers. What? You heard right, and it's happening at McDonald's of all places. Panic hit among fast food fans in China yesterday, after customers found themselves unable to get their daily Big Macs. No, it’s not a joke. American-based OSI Group LLC, one of McDonald’s main meat suppliers, recalled products made in the country. The restaurant company’s China unit said in an e-mailed statement yesterday, that it is offering a “limited” menu in the country.

China has been dealing with several problems concerning food quality in fast food restaurants across the country in the last years and this incident is only fueling already existing concerns among Asian customers. OSI was accused of repackaging old meat as new, which lead to a Monday recall of several of their products. When customers went for their meal the other day, delivery dispatchers for McDonald’s in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities confirmed that fish burgers were the only sandwiches available.

"Some restaurants across [China] might be out of stock on certain products. We sincerely apologize to customers for the inconvenience and hope to have their understanding,”
the company said in the statement, yesterday.

Authorities in Shanghai just over a week ago shut a plant owned by the same OSI Group for mixing out-of-date meat with fresh product and late detained five officials from the company’s subsidiary which operated it, Shanghai Husi Food Co. But the Oak Brook-based world’s largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants is not the only affected. In fact, the factory’s customers in China included KFC, Pizza Hut, coffee chain Starbucks, Burger King, 7-Eleven convenience stores and Papa John’s Pizza.

So, if you ever thought recalls only happen in the auto industry you should check this scandal out.
