Chevy Volt Has a 50 Miles Max Electric Range

American manufacturer GM is slowly revealing the details of their future star of the lineup, the Chevrolet Volt. After several other important aspects of the vehicle have been revealed in recent weeks, one of the biggest questions still remaining, the all-electric range of the vehicle, has been answered this week by the carmaker.

According to the 560 page S1 document filed by GM with the US Security and Exchange commission, in light of the soon to be initial public offering (IPO), the Volt will ensure an all-electric range of up to 50 miles (80 km). That number could be however as low as 25 miles (40 km), depending on “terrain, driving technique, temperature and battery age.”

The minimum and maximum ranges revealed by the document and reported by gm-volt.com are, however, a bit confusing. 25 miles is, in most of the industry's view, about the worst case scenario when it comes to the capabilities of a plug-in. On the other hand, the 50 miles range is something like the Promised Land all PHEVs would like to go sometime.

This means that GM is either not sure yet on the exact range, or it is just trying to play it safe. On average, the Volt will likely be capable of in between 30 and 40 miles of clean motoring.

On the other hand, those hoping for the Volt to have a huge electric range should remember that the Volt is not an electric vehicle, but a plug-in. With the electric motors working like range extenders, the Volt promises a total range of about 340 miles (547 km), more than enough to fit everybody's needs.
