For the better part of the 1990s and 2000s, Chevrolet struggled to offer a competitive compact with the Cavalier and then the Cobalt. That all changed in 2008, though, when the all-new Chevrolet Cruze was launched globally, and in the years since, the Cruze has proven to be a very popular with Chevrolet recently announcing that the car has surpassed three million sales worldwide.
So far, China is the hottest market for Chevy’s compact sedan with more than a third (1.13 million since 2009) of the total sales coming from that country. This trend is very likely to continue following the recent debut of the Chinese-spec Cruze (shown above) going on sale last week with its distinctive level of style and luxury. Coming in at a close second, the U.S. market is responsible for 900,000 Cruze sales despite only having been on sale since 2010, but even if you combined the total sales of the Cruze in North America, that number is still outdone by China. Some of the other key markets for the Chevrolet Cruze include Russia (195,000), Brazil (134,000) and Canada (123,000).

One of the many factors that has likely played into the rampant success of the Cruze is its numerous global configurations. With this car offered in now four different body styles (sedan, Chinese sedan, hatchback and station wagon) and five powertrain options, the Cruze is able to offer a specific target for the region in which it is being sold. In addition to this, the Chevrolet Cruze also benefits from a truly global manufacturing system with assembly taking place in 11 different countries for sales in 118 countries.

The Cruze is an extremely adaptable car that can cater to the demands of nearly every market in the world. It is a testament to Chevrolet’s global focus and capabilities to offer a car that is so highly regarded in so many places,” said Alan Batey, GM executive vice president of Global Chevrolet.
