Chevrolet Camaro Not Getting Four-Cylinder Engine

Muslcecar enthusiasts have been wondering whether or not Chevrolet and Chrysler will offer four-cylinder options on the Camaro and Challenger ever since it was revealed that the next-generation Ford Mustang will become available with a four-potter under the hood.

Dodge confirmed earlier this year that the Charger and Challenger models won’t be equipped with such engines, but it’s only this month that Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser said Chevy won’t offer a turbocharged four-cylinder musclecar.

“We’re not following Ford. As long as they (Chevrolet) will pay me to be the chief engineer, I’m going to fight for every horsepower I can and every cylinder I can,” Oppenheiser said on the sidelines of the 2013 SEMA Show, according to AutoGuide.

On the other hand, he says that Detroit may be forced to give up on V8 engines in the future, when corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) will be revised to force automakers to tone down their gas-guzzling vehicles.

“It’s kind of the golden era of the pony car. In the future - something I don’t think the public realizes yet - there may be a day when nobody - Ford, Chrysler or GM - ha a V8, or if they do it would be a very highly priced V8 because you’ve got to add your whole stable of cars and come up with a fuel economy number,” he added.

The 2015 Ford Mustang is expected to be unveiled with a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that will develop at least 300 horsepower.
