The fact that M3s are being used as smoke machines around the world doesn’t surprise anyone anymore. Rear-wheel drive and 400 HP are a match made in heaven for those looking to burn some rubber but with the new model, it’s a lot easier to do it than ever before.
On the new M3 and M4, BMW decided to introduce the so-called ‘Smokey Burnout’ function that allows you to simply shred the rear tires to pieces without damaging the transmission.

The thing is, on the previous gen models, when hooked with the 7-speed DCT gearbox, the cars would prevent you from doing burnouts to protect the transmission. It’s no longer the case as BMW fitted a CFRP prop shaft on the new models that can withstand greater forces than the one used before. It’s also lighter and has a smaller rotating mass which, in turn, gives the car a couple more advantages.

Gustav, from GTBoard.com had an F80 M3 all for himself for a couple of days and decided to use it to the max, as often as possible. Therefore, the S55 3-liter bi-turbo engine and its 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque were put to work on the daily.

In its latest video, we get to see the Smokey Burnout function in action. Basically, all you have to do is switch the car in Sport+, turn off the DSC, press the accelerator hard and release the brake pedal before activating Launch Control. Then, depending on how long you want to drift you can either press the brake pedal ever so slightly (so that you go forward slowly) or release it completely.
