Cellphones Cause 25% of U.S. Car Crashes

The primarily distractions when it comes to driving are the cellphones, as the crashes that are associated with cellphone usage when driving rose up to 25% in the U.S.according to a study released by Governors Highway Safety Association(GHSA).The study assessed research from more than 350 scientific papers published since 2000. It is showed that the driver is distracted up to half of the time he spends behind the wheel, more often causing minor injury and in some cases fatal injury.

Cellphone use raises the chances of a crash, instead texting is likely to increase crash risk more than cellphone use.

"Despite all that has been written about driver distraction, there is still a lot that we do not know. Clearly, more studies need to be done addressing both the scope of the problem and how to effectively address it." said GHSA executive director Barbara Harsha.

The report shows no conclusive evidence on whether hands-free cellphone use is less risky that the handheld one. Also evidence is lacking on whether cellphone or texting bans have reduced crashes or injuries. The Governors Highway Association has proposed a complete ban on cellphone use, with or without handsfree, for beginner drivers, who present the higher risk. Also the association recommended a texting ban for all drivers.

The action is tacking shape as 30 U.S. states an the District of Columbia have banned the use of all cellphones by novice drivers and 41 states along with Washington,D.C., have prohibited texting by beginner drivers.
