The pure sports vehicle builder Caterham will increase the production capacity at its Dartford plant to respond to the fact that it has registered an increasing demand, as autocar reports.
The UK manufacturer has seen its demand grow over the last 12 months, especially from overseas, a trend that has lead to the increasing of the automaker’s vehicle delivery waiting time. Caterham has set itself an annual production target of 500 units, a move that will reduce the current waiting time of four weeks.
On the UK market, the company’s best seller is the Roadsport 175, which is powered by a 2.0 liter, four cylinder Ford Duratec engine that delivers 175 hp at 7,000 rpm and 139 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm, allowing the 550 kg car to reach 62mph in 4.8 seconds and go on to a top speed of 138 mph.
The track-orientated Superlight R300 model is also very popular in Great Britain. This uses the same 2.0 liter engine, but is 45 kg lighter and has different driving settings. The third place in the UK sales statistics is taken by the entry level model of the Caterham range, the Roadsport 125, which uses a 1.6 liter Ford Sigma unit developing 125 hp at 6,100 rpm and 120 lb-ft of torque.
"The export market has certainly been boosted by the exchange rate but more decisively by our success in achieving European Type Approval last year and the launch of the Ford Duratec powered Roadsport 175," Ansar Ali, managing director of Caterham Cars was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source. “Adding to our capacity merely underlines our position in the market.”
