When people started to mess around over the Internet and created malware, companies formed quickly to create anti-malware softwares. We won’t get to discuss the conspiracy that those companies are also creating the viruses now just so you have to buy the antivirus, but we will discuss about the same problem happening with cars now.
Since vehicles now are basically controlled by onboard computers, hackers found different ways to crack into the system and endanger its integrity. Last year, security experts (as in ex hackers) Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek showed the people that using a tiny device connected to a car diagnostic port can allow them to basically drive it from a laptop.

Last week, a Tesla Model S has been hacked into as part of the Syscan 360 security convention in Beijing. All demonstrating that vehicles are vulnerable to hacking if someone wishes to hurt you. However, some sort of antivirus is on its way to be revealed soon and solve the issue.

According to Wired, the two experts mentioned above are said to present the solution at the Black Hat USA security conference next month. Their device is made out of an mbed NXP micro controller and a simple board, all summing up to around $150 (€111/£67).

The device gets plugged into the OBD port of any vehicle, then it starts learning what processes are running and keeps track of their regularity. When somebody wants to sneak into the system, the changes they make are pretty obvious since they don’t stick to the pattern, and they get immediately detected.

Once detected, the car enters a “limp” mode, meaning that most of the assisting systems that can be hacked will be shut down until the problem gets solved.

And what’s even better is the fact that the two Good Guy Gregs are not planning to sell their device. Instead, they’ll use it just to show automakers how easy is to implement the safety feature to their vehicles.
