Americans like their pickup trucks overly solid, as demonstrated by many carmakers' shyness when it comes to delivering mid-size blue collar machines.
However, this hasn't discouraged a one-man crew called Canadian UTE Team from coming up with a conversion kit that aims to bring back the affordable small pickup trucks that used to haul stuff around back in the 80s.

Moving away from Datsuns and Toyotas, these guys focused on the Golf-based Caddy of the time. To keep the budget in check, they're targeting the Mk IV Golf and Jetta, having created a conversion kit.

If you happen to own a 1999-2004 Golf/Jetta and lust for a bed, this guy will build everything in your driveway, over the course of a weekend.

In fact, here are the full contents of the package, which goes by the name of Smyth Performance Truck Kit:

  • Fiberglass left and right quarter panels
  • Fiberglass rear window surround
  • Rear slider window
  • Steel .120 steel roof/b pillar reinforcements
  • Aluminum inner structural bed sides Aluminum corrugated bed floor sections 1/8" thick
  • Steel OEM tailgate with all hinges and latches
  • Tail light assemblies and wiring/bulbs
  • Center fiberglass rear roll pan/bumper cover
  • Plexiglass rear quarter windows
  • Stainless and Zinc plated fasteners
  • Inner carpet rear section trim

While we're not really sure about how all the cutting and removing affects the structure of the car in terms of both driving and a potential crash, perhaps a roll cage would be the final act required here. Who knows, maybe he'll install one if you ask for it.

The man has even put together a timelapse video that reduces his conversion job to a 30-minute clip. From stripping out the interior to the final step that can see you putting the car to work, everything is found behind the "play" button below.
