BYD S6 SUV Previewed

Chinese carmaker BYD, who recently announced its optimistic plans to become the world's number one carmaker, is now testing the S6 SUV, a model that has been often linked with Lexus RX. The reasons are obvious and one can easily notice them only by looking at the car.

Similar to the previous version of the RX, BYD's SUV will boast a different interior, according to chinacartimes.com. Furthermore, the model will come equipped with a start-stop function for cutting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as with several gadgets, including USB connectivity for the in-car audio system.

Details on the engine to be available on the S6 are yet to be disclosed but the aforementioned source notes that it might get a 2.0-liter unit, similar to the one on the F8 coupe. In this case, the car goes from 0 to 100km/h in around 14 seconds so, taking into account that S6 will be actually an
SUV, engine performance might be a bit disappointing.

As for pricing, the S6 might be sold for around 150,000rmb, which represents approximately $22,000.

The car is still undergoing several tests and there's no word on the date to see such a model on the streets. Still, taking into account its price and the standard features that might be offered at a smaller price as compared to the Lexus, it could represent a major step for helping BYD become a top auto company.

As we said, BYD hopes to become the number one carmaker by 2025 and take the leading position in the domestic market by 2015.

"We have plenty of time to become China's top carmaker by 2015 with a complete and mature product line-up. I am sure we can achieve the target earlier than scheduled," Wang Jianjun, deputy general manager of BYD Auto Sales Co told the China Daily. "BYD was also making efforts to overtake Toyota to become the world's No 1 carmaker in 2025, with annual sales of over 10 million cars expected by that time," Wang said.
