Button: "I'm on the Top of the World!"
From the looks of it, there’s no major change on top of the standings, as the Brackley based team smashed the competition the same way as in the non-European rounds: 1-2 win from pole position. With one more step being made accordingly by the British team, Button reckons he can really fancy a maiden F1 title now.
“It is a dream come true so far this season, even when times are tough we seem to be able to get the wins. When it goes well it goes well, last year when it went bad it went bad. I feel on top of the world at the moment. The team have done a great job and with this package you could see we have got our advantage back again, and thanks to Mercedes as we couldn't do it without them,” said Button, winner of 4 races from the first 5 races this season.
Button also thanked his team for the switch in pit strategy that eventually allowed him to pass teammate Barrichello for 1st place. Although he was initially scheduled to stop 3 times, the British driver opted for 2 stops, giving him a 10-second edge over the Brazilian in the closing laps of the race.
“We were both going in that direction but they switched me to two stops to cover all our bases. Three stops was the quicker strategy, we thought. I wasn't sure about going to two stops because when I put the fuel on board it felt very heavy. I didn't think I would come out ahead of Felipe and Sebastian but I did. So I put my head down and concentrated on going as fast as possible,” said Button.
The British driver is now 14 points clear of teammate Barrichello in the drivers’ standings, while 18 points ahead of 3rd placed Vettel.
