Here’s one more police department in the US which decided to go green as far as part of their patrol vehicles are concerned. Zero Motorcycles announces that the Burbank, CA Police Department expanded the fleet by means of newly-purchased police-spec electric motorcycles.
This is not the first encounter the Burbank law enforcement officers have with the electric motorcycles. "The Burbank Police Department's enthusiasm for the Zero Motorcycles patrol models has been evident since we began working with them earlier this year, and we are excited to have them on board," says Harlan Flagg, owner of Hollywood Electrics, the local Zero representative.
Burbank officers will rider Zero DSP, FXP and SP machines. The street-focused S model will most likely be used for highway and city patrolling most of the time, whereas the DS will make effortless transfers between urban pavement and gravel. For the tougher trails, the Burbank police officers will use the Zero FX, a bike which integrates plenty motocross-derived technologies aimed at providing consistent performance even on really rough terrain.
All three models have been modified to comply with the police equipment standards and are delivered complete with pursuit emergency lighting and sirens, safety components, and functional storage options to carry gear, patrol items, and emergency medical equipment.
Given the instantaneous torque electric motorcycles generate, their acceleration surpasses that of most other vehicles and so they are great for putting an early end to a pursuit. At the same time, the bikes can be used for stealthily approaching sensitive areas or for silently idling during police operations. Even more, they can have access to closed parks and even indoor spaces, as they produce no exhaust gases, insignificant noise levels and won’t leak oil or coolant.

The motorcycles the Burbank PD received are based on the production series machines, and have no special “superpowers”.
