With no replacement for he Veyron in sight, Bugatti is leaving its mark on the 2014 auto show season with yet another special edition. The second-to-last member of the six-part Legends Edition, Black Bess pays tribute to a famous Type 18 model that shares its looks.
Built in the pre-war era, the Type 18 is a very important car for Bugatti. Only seven were made, this particular one being bought by French aviation pioneer Roland Garros, which would explain the theme of the car. Back in the day, a 5-liter engine with 100 horsepower took that car to previously unheard of levels of speed and performance.
Our modern day car has a little bit more power though. Being based on the Grad Sport Vitesse convertible, its 8-liter W16 monster of an engine makes 1,200 horsepower. That doesn't make it special though, attention to detail does that job.
Hand-painted door panels are fitted inside the cabin, depicting scenes of the historic Type 18 “Black Bess” and Garros' airplane. The Veyron also features bodywork made entirely of carbon fiber and painted in black with gold accents.
Some components are even gold-plated, like the grille surround the logos, hub caps and the gas cap. Needless to say, such attention to detail comes at a hefty cost, made worse by the exclusivity factor. Only three will be made and offered to the world's wealthy for the net price of €2.15 million ($2.97 million).
Look for this gold-plated, carbon fiber tub tribute to the past at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show, starting April 20.
