After a long hiatus, the Borgward name is about to make a comeback. Spurred on by the nephew of the company’s original founder and a Chinese company, the Germans just revealed their first creation since the 1960s: the BX7 SUV.
To be completely frank, it looks better than expected, showing its German heritage with sober colors and shapes. The front grille is the most controversial design cue of the entire car, hinting at some Buick models. Other than that, we could say this is mostly original.
The rhombus logo up front was resurrected and the headlights are connected to the grille, a la BMW X5 if you will. Thankfully, they have a different design, with LEDs used on their lower side.
The waistline is a bit high, making us believe that this was actually designed to appeal to those customers that are soberer than anything else. Wide fenders complete the package and make this car a rather attractive proposition.
According to Auto Bild Germany, it’s also quite big in size, even though it doesn’t look that way from the pictures. The publication claims that the length of the SUV is 4.7 meters (185 inches) which would theoretically allow it to have up to 7 seats inside. That remains to be seen at this point.
The big question surrounding this car is related to the powertrain, though. Nobody knows exactly who is providing the mills under the bonnet. However, it is said that there will be 2-liter petrol and diesel mills animating things. The first choice available will be making 224 HP, hooked up to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with all-wheel drive that uses electronically controlled multi-plate clutches.
Since the company will be showing this car for the first time at Frankfurt next week, they will do so in grand style. Their most advanced model will be put up for showcase, a plug-in hybrid with 401 HP and an electric range of 55 km (34.1 miles).
In this configuration, the car has the same 2-liter petrol turbocharged 4-cylinder mill under the bonnet working in parallel with an electric motor that powers the rear axle alone.
Things are definitely looking good and with a starting price of around €26,000 ($29,350), Borgward might actually make a comeback in the next few years. At first, it will only be available in China but in the future we’ll also get to see the BX7 sold in Europe.
