The centennial anniversary of the Bonneville Speed Week is going to be a little peculiar this year, as the rain in the Salt Lake City area hampered this year’s edition of the famous land speed competition. Basically, the track at the Bonneville Salt Flats is covered by brine, and it looks like it will not go away in time for the Speed Week.
The Speed Week was initially scheduled for August 23-38, but Southern California Timing Association’s experts who were in Bonneville believe that the water will not dry in time to allow the races to take place. Even more, it’s not enough that the water dries out: the salt surface must become dry and hard enough to support multiple passes from the vehicles entered into the Speed Week and upcoming similar events.

SCTA officials are analyzing the possibility of amassing the World Finals event scheduled for September 30 – October 3 and the Speed Week, to properly mark a century of land speed record breaking at the iconic salt flats the way it should be done - with speeding bikes and cars down the track.

Updates on the condition of the salt track will be provided by the SCTA, but even though the Speed Week has been delayed, you can still get your 100 Years of Speed anniversary t-shirt and celebrate a whole century of such beautiful madness. Even more, by getting the t-shirt you’ll also be helping the Bonneville Speedway Museum relocate, effectively becoming a part of the racing world. It looks like the efforts recently made by multiple organizations to restore the salt surface of the Bonneville raceway were a good start to restore this iconic spot, but there is still a long way ahead, provided the gods of rain reach an agreement with the gods of speed.
