The auto industry had self-parking cars for quite some time now. In the beginning, you had to operate the pedals while the car steered itself while later on these systems became so good that all you had to do for the car to park itself was to press a button.

Now, BMW wants to introduce a new system, one that doesn’t even require a human being inside the car. Their new remote control parking system promises that if you don’t have enough space to get out of your car after parking it, you won’t have to worry.

The way it works is rather interesting too. You get your car in position, aligned with the spot, exit and then press a button on the new display key to have it position itself perfectly within the lines.

To activate the remote control parking function, the car has to be positioned at a maximum angle of 10° to the selected parking space. The maximum distance that can be covered by the car during driverless maneuvers in and out of parking spaces is 1.5 times the length of the car.

When it comes to parking, that’s not the only innovation though. Even when they are ensconced in their seat behind the steering wheel, drivers of the new BMW 7 Series will receive more assistance than ever now.
The latest version of the optional Parking Assistant now allows you to park transversely to the road as well. The system takes over the entire parking process, including all the steering, gear changes, acceleration and braking maneuvers required.

In addition, the system also includes the Active Park Distance Control function. During reversing maneuvers, it uses precisely timed braking inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles around the rear or sides of the car. Until we get to drive it and see what’s what, here’s a quick teaser of what’s to come.
